PRAY:

Attending daily Mass during Lent may seem like a big sacrifice, but imagine feeling the way you do after receiving the Eucharist on Sunday every day.

FAST:

Do people ask you why you're fasting or not eating meat during Lent?

Christ has said, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

Giving up something we enjoy strengthens our love for Christ and our resilience against temptation!

Meatless recipes that the whole family will love.

SOD 0313 SaintLeanderofSeville 790x480 510x310

Saint Leander of Seville was a Catholic bishop surrounded by Arians for much of his life. He fought hard to restore faith in the divinity of Christ, using the profession of the Nicene Creed as a tool.

Today, recite the Nicene Creed before finishing your daily prayers.

Wednesday, March 15

FAST:

As March 17, 2017, the Feast of St. Patrick falls on a Friday during Lent, Bishop Cunningham grants a dispensation from abstinence.  At the same time, Bishop Cunningham reminds all priests that they should instruct their faithful of the need for fasting and abstaining from meat on Good Friday and on the other Fridays of Lent.

X

Thursday, March 16

PRAY:

In his Lenten message, Pope Francis refers us to the Gospel of Luke and the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, saying 'The Gospel of the rich man and Lazarus helps us to make a good preparation for the approach of Easter. '  Read today's Gospel, and then reflect on the Holy Father's Lenten Message.

X

Friday, March 17

FAST:

Bishop Cunningham has granted a dispensation from abstinence today, St. Patrick's Day.  Have you considered fasting from something besides meat instead?  What could you fast from today that might allow you more time in conversation with God?

X

Saturday, March 18

PRAY:

Today's Saint of the Day is St. Cyril of Jerusalem.  Raised in Jerusalem and well-educated, especially in the Scriptures, he was ordained a priest and given the task during Lent of catechizing those preparing for Baptism and catechizing the newly baptized during the Easter season.  Pray for our catechumens!

PRAY:

Solemnity of Saint Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Joseph was completely open to all that God wanted to do for him.  He became holy by opening himself totally to God.  It may seem daunting to just give yourself totally to God, so start small.  When you find yourself feeling stressed today, take a deep breath and 'give it up to God!'

X

Tuesday, March 21

FAST:

Today, fast from media (TV, Internet, radio) and instead, spend that time in conversation with God.   Try to do this one day a week!

Monday, March 27

PRAY:

We cannot keep ourselves shut up in parishes, in our communities, in our parish or diocesan institutions, when so many people are waiting for the Gospel! To go out as ones sent. It is not enough simply to open the door in welcome because they come, but we must go out through that door to seek and meet the people! - Pope Francis, 7/27/13, Mass with Bishops

How will you share the Good News of Jesus Christ during Lent

X

Tuesday, March 28

FAST:

What we give up for Lent can change lives.

X

Wednesday, March 29

PRAY:

(and give!)

A prayer that does not lead you to practical action for your brother — the poor, the sick, those in need of help, a brother in difficulty — is a sterile and incomplete prayer. But, in the same way . . . When time is not set aside for dialogue with him in prayer, we risk serving ourselves and not God present in our needy brother and sister. St Benedict sums up the kind of life that indicated for his monks in two words: ora et labora, pray and work. It is from contemplation, from a strong friendship with the Lord that the capacity is born in us to live and to bring the love of God, his mercy, his tenderness, to others. And also our work with brothers in need, our charitable works of mercy, lead us to the Lord, because it is in the needy brother and sister that we see the Lord himself.  - Pope Francis, 7/21/13
