Syracuse, NY-- After years of declining enrollment and accompanying financial difficulties, the difficult decision was made to close Cathedral Academy at Pompei in Syracuse at the end of the 2024 academic year.
In September 2006, Cathedral School and Our Lady of Pompei School merged to form Cathedral Academy at Pompei (CAP) at the Our Lady of Pompei School building located at 923 N. McBride Street, Syracuse. The school is primarily supported by Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peters Church with scholarship assistance from the Diocese of Syracuse and other foundations. Unfortunately, the enrollment and financial challenges precipitated this decision which was accepted by Most Rev. Douglas J Lucia, Bishop of Syracuse, “with sadness and regret”.
“I truly empathize with the families of the CAP School community, who desire a Catholic school education, but the low enrollment, the financial stress on the parish and the depleted resources have forced this difficult decision”, states Bishop Lucia. “I remain firm in my commitment to our Catholic schools and Catholic education which are important tools in sharing the Good News and evangelizing efforts that each of our schools provide our young people,” Bishop Lucia said.
In a letter to parents, Rev Dan Caruso, Pastor of Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peters Church and Dr. Amy Sansone, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, stated that “While the closure of our school is a loss, we want to assure you that our commitment to serving the needs of parishioners and the community remains unwavering. We will work tirelessly to ensure that every child has access to a quality Catholic education and that our parish continues to be a place of warmth, compassion and faith.”
In the coming weeks, staff will work closely with the families to assist with the transition process and to provide guidance on alternative educational options. There are 21 Catholic schools in the Diocese of Syracuse, six of which are elementary schools in Onondaga County.
