The Pontifical Mission Societies, aka The Society for the Propagation of the Faith, accepts monetary gifts in the form of general donations, special donations to the Missionary Childhood Association, St. Peter the Apostle Native Clergy, bequests from wills, Mass stipends, and other miscellaneous donations for the work of the missions.
In 1926 Pope Pius XI instituted Mission Sunday for the whole Church with the first worldwide Mission Sunday collection taking place in October 1927. The Mission Sunday collection is always taken on the next to last Sunday during the month of October. That day is celebrated in all the local Churches as the feast of catholicity and universal solidarity so Christians all over the world will recognize their common responsibility regarding the evangelization of the world.
The Office coordinates the Mission Cooperation Plan, whereby visiting missionaries are permitted to speak in one or more parishes in the diocese, typically during the summer. Missions sending personnel apply to the office requesting a place in the plan and assignments are made during Lent. Speakers consist of missionaries from American and Foreign Dioceses, Religious Orders of Men or Women, and special local charitable organizations of both religious and lay people.
